Terschelling, Netherlands (May 2009)
It's about 26 nautical miles, four bridges, and a lock from Franeker to Terschelling. On the way Dutch customs officials boarded us-our first boarding at sea.
The Dutch barrier islands, of which Terschelling is one, are a graveyard of wrecked boats. The local public art is largely composed of wreckage recovered from the sea. The native vegetation reminded us of the Oregon dunes.
