This awesome archeological site is just outside of Oaxaca. The individual sites within the complex date from 650 BC to about 800 AD. Most of the ruins are Zapotec, but some later ones show Mixta influence. The Zapotec civilization that built the city pre-dates the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs. Monte Albán has its own museum, but many artifacts from the site are also in the archeological museum in Oaxaca.

We've visited many archeological sites in our travels—Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, and others in the southwest— but this is the most impressive we've seen so far.
